Date Information

late 17th-century

Description

"Depicting on a yellow field the blazon of the Medici. The present shield lacks arm supports and was probably used for decoration only. It is not to be confused, however, with panoply shields of later date. Its workmanship shows the hand of an armorer and its type of decoration is earlier than the year 1700.

Provenance: Purchased by William Randolph Hearst from Bashford Dean Arms & Armor Sale, American Art Galleries, November 18, 1921, thru P. W. French & Co., January 14, 1922."
