Description

"Plated with twelve steel plates, each embossed in the centre; it retains its breech-loading matchlook ""Gonne"", or pistol and peep-hole, and original canvas lining. This is probably one of the forty-seven shields mentioned in the inventory of the Tower of London in the year 1547.

Provenance: Purchased by William Randolph Hearst from Duveen Brothers, Inc., London, January 23, 1922 for $2,273.27; sold to Gimbel Bros., Inc., May 26, 1941 for $747.50."
