"Gracefully modeled, the long gilt barrel which tapers towards the muzzle is partly fluted and partly engraved with bands of guilloche ornament. The lock is a blued with gilt borders, and the stock is inlaid with engraved staghorn, egg-shaped pommel of rare type. The beautiful design and perfect balance of this piece proclaim it the work of a master craftsman. From the Engel-Gros Collection. Exhibited at the South Kensington Museum. Provenance: Purchased by William Randolph Hearst from S.J. Whawell Sale, Sotheby & Co., through the National Magazine Co., London, England, May 3, 1927 for $1459.88; sold to Gimbel Bros., Inc., July 26, 1941 for $1064."
