Description

Design from one of a set based on cartoons originally attributed to Lucas Van Leyden (ca. 1494-1533). It pictures a procession of three couples in a richly decorated dining room, the men carrying torches and the women, arrows. Seated at the table, is the two headed deity Janus, to the right, the goddess of abundance and to the left, a sleeping woman representing the year that has just passed. A figure of Aquarius is enclosed in the center of the original wide border of fruit and flowers. Provenance: Purchased by William Randolph Hearst from French and Co., New York, March 30, 1922.
