The relationship between sleep and selective attention between adolescents

Major/Area of Research

School Psychology

Description

INTRODUCTION:This study explores the relationship between sleep and selective attention among adolescents, highlighting why sleep is critical for cognitive functioning during this important stage of development. As an adolescent, irregular sleep patterns are common due to academic demands, social activities, and increased screen time. However, these habits can negatively impact your ability to focus and perform effectively. Selective attention—the ability to concentrate on important information while ignoring distractions—is essential for success in school and everyday life. This study focuses on how both the quality and amount of sleep directly influence your attentional control.

METHOD: A quantitative research design was used, involving adolescents within a defined age range. Participants reported their own sleep duration and quality, which were then compared to their performance on standardized selective attention tasks. These tasks measured how quickly and accurately participants responded, as well as how well they ignored distractions. Statistical analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between sleep patterns and attention performance.

RESULTS: The findings showed a clear and significant relationship between sleep and attention. Adolescents who maintained consistent, high-quality sleep performed better—they responded faster, made fewer mistakes, and were more focused. On the other hand, those who experienced poor or inconsistent sleep had more difficulty concentrating, were more easily distracted, and showed slower thinking and response times. These results suggest that not getting enough sleep directly reduces your ability to stay focused and filter out distractions.

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Overall, study findings suggest that sleep habits play a major role in how well your brain functions, especially when it comes to attention. Poor sleep can negatively affect your academic performance and daily activities, while healthy sleep routines can improve focus, efficiency, and mental clarity. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing sleep and developing good sleep habits. By improving your sleep hygiene, you can enhance both your academic success and overall well-being.
