Description

INTRODUCTION: “Imperium in quo sol nunquam occidit.” The empire on which the sun never sets. The Great British was one of the greatest feats of human ambition and arrogance. Grand strategy is a study of the extent of human capabilities and limits.Imposing dominance, culture and authority over 25% of the world, the Great British Empire  is a perfect modern example of the enduring potential of human power and influence. Accompanied by interpretations from scholars Shashi Tharoor, Robert Hyam, Ashley Jackson and John Darwin and an analysis against the principals in The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, On Grand Strategy by John Gaddis and On War by Carl von Clausewitz the Great British Empire presents an impressive grand strategy composed of conniving economic policies, novel governing tactics and simple yet potent persuasion.

METHOD: Analysis of scholarly interpretations from Shashi Tharoor, An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India (2016),Ronald Hyam, Understanding British Empire (2010), Ashley Jackson, The British Empire: A Very Short Introduction (2013), John Darwin, The Empire Project: The Rise and Fall of the British World System, 1830-1970 was conducted along with reference to strategies in The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli (1513), On Grand Strategy by John L. Gaddis (2019) and On War by Carl von Clausewitz (1834).

RESULTS: The Great British Empire presents an impressive grand strategy composed of conniving economic policies, novel governing tactics and simple yet potent persuasion.

CONCLUSION/DISCUSSION: This literature analysis of the Great British Empire has provided insights into modern and unique approach to crafting and maintaining global human dominance. Many scholars agree the British Empire was a construction designed for imperial control under the pretense of economic intentions and the empire was a racist construct and applied manipulation under the pretense of bureaucracy. A predominant limitation is the lack of perspectives of individuals from British territories. By all accounts, the Great British Empire is indicative of triumphant grand strategy.
