INTRODUCTION: This presentation demonstrates how an actor can apply scoring methods used to analyze Shakespearean text to probe contemporary scripts.
METHOD: When applied to a monologue from the film The Devil Wears Prada, aspects of Shakespearean scoring such as punctuation, assonance, alliteration, repetition, antithesis, lists, ladders, and telescoping, deepen the actor's understanding of the character's motivation, thought process, and subtext.
RESULTS: The scoring acts as a blueprint for the actor to make well informed and creative choices in their role.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: These Shakespearean scoring methods can be used to examine texts from a variety of eras, including contemporary drama, making it an integral tool for an actor.
