Description
One of a set of four tapestries woven for Marie-Ann de Bourbon, Princess de Conti to decorate two rooms of her residence, Chateau de Choisey-le-Roi. In the center of each panel is the coat-of-arms of the Conti family. The tapestries are woven after the 16th century grotesque design of Guilio Romano and the landscape in the center by the French painter Charles Chastelain. Provenance: Set of four, purchased by William Randolph Hearst from French and Co., New York, January 2, 1923 for $120,000; sold to Le Passe, October, 1942, $25,100, further noted as a possible appraisal, "set of 4, $59,995."
