The William Randolph Hearst Archive records a notable collection of photographs of objects purchased by Hearst during the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. It contains objects such as arms and armor, building parts, stained glass, furniture, paintings, sculpture, pottery, china, and tapestries. The range of objects covers a substantial time frame in the history of art and incorporates Ancient art through works from the 19th century. The majority of the records are of European art from the 13th through the 18th century although substantial numbers of non-European objects are also represented. With its photographs, supporting documents, miscellaneous correspondence and Hearst’s personal library of sales catalogs, the Archive functions as a resource for scholars and an instructional tool for students and individuals interested in the history of art and art collecting
